HISTORY OF C.A.B'S
Citizen's Advice Bureaus or C.A.B's were established in Britain in 1938 prior to the outbreak of the Second World War to help people understand and cope with new legislation. When the war ended the service continued, as C.A.B.'s were able to help people with post war problems and any further new legislation, especially in the welfare field.
HISTORY OF C.A.B'S IN VICTORIA
The first CAB’s were established in Victoria following a pilot program in 1962 and there are now over 50 CAB’s in the state. A list of the suburban centres is listed in the White Pages under “Community Information Centres”
HISTORY OF DANDENONG C.A.B
Following a public meeting attended by members of the local community, council, local politicians, service clubs and community organisations, a steering committee was formed to work towards establishing a C.A.B in Dandenong. The C.A.B. has now been operating for almost 33 years. It opened on November 6th, 1969 in the Dandenong Town Hall and was located there until February 2001 when the service moved to 186 Foster Street East. Council initiated this move because of their proposal to turn the Town Hall into a Performing Arts Centre.
